This one is a minefield of ways to fail. I may go crazy :D I've had one idea that sticks: Frecency sort the list. It's not perfect, but it would be largely effective, and seems relatively (to my untrained eye, compared to total redesigns, or custom sorting like 384782) quick and easy, and portable to other designs (eg it would work here, and in Jakob's design).
