Sure. Agreed. Many thanks! I like both of the proposed solutions. The computer
in question is a client only, and I don't actually care if I have to reboot it,
but would rather not. It runs the big monitor in the room where I meet with
people, and I hate to have my visitors watch me reboot just to have a meeting
(What kind of mac is that, they ask).  Having it cycle through the server
images it is a kind of digital poster when I'm not using it.  For sure not
everybody's use case, but we have millions of KDE users. 

I have thought of other workarounds a data center would do, but I'm just one
guy. I had the problem more acutely with Dolphin, which would poll the remote
volume a lot if you had it in the sidebar (and then freeze). They seem to have
fixed that. Now the worst it does is like if you pull the USB out with the
folder open, just puts up a warning and keeps working.
