After writing it, I restarted the machine and rearranged the icons on the desktop as I like to see them Since then, I have been away from the PC for over 40 minutes on 2 occasions. In both cases the system went to sleep but, when it woke up, the icons were still all in their place. I don't understand why, before writing my previous comment, they didn't stay where I had put them.
