Sorry for the late reply; somehow the notification of Gmail on my phone has not been working. I just disabled that effect, and I immediately liked this better, because the animation had been annoying. But, as the reappearing is sporadic and I don't know the exact condition, I think I need to keep using the desktop for a while to make sure that it never happens again.
