You can deliberately unmaximize a window using a key combination such as Super
+ LeftArrow, which I use regularly in school to cite texts or similar.
As previously mentioned, Firefox specifically often gets unmaximized when using
the top right drawer (for example to enable Wi-Fi).
Firefox has some small non-obvious places by which you can double-click the
window to maximize it, those are hard to press with a touchpad though, and
basically impossible to press using just the touch screen.

This is the case. Anything maximizable is maximized by default.
