Check your drive, USB connections, etc. The idea of an application running with user rights crashing Windows has been a thing of the past for many years, even with Windows. The only possibility I have is that you have broken OpenGL drivers. To test this, go to the digiKam settings under Miscellaneous->System and activate the option to force software OpenGL (restart digiKam). Report if anything has changed.
