This is because the Symbols Only Nerd Font release package contains both the regular `Nerd Font` which is double-width, and the `Nerd Font Mono` variant which is strictly single-width for terminal compatibility and fontconfig compliance. Fontconfig prefers the latter. You could likely configure it to prefer the double wide version so you can avoid the need to patch fonts, or remove the mono NF if you will never need it...
