There's already some discussion regarding the size of the desktop at
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=487546, feel free to follow that bug as
well.
You can close the "Panel Configuration" dialog to increase the size of the
desktop view, and if you need an even larger view, the "Add Widget" dialog as
well.
