On my Arch Linux system I observed a similar "empty space". It turned out to be
the keyboard layout indicator, which was not able to determine the current
keyboard layout and therefore displayed nothing.
I was able to solve this by setting the keyboard layout through KDE's system
settings or using "localectl set-keymap XY".
