This is not a bug. You can specify how grouped items are to be treated in the
digiKam settings under Miscellaneous in Grouping for various actions. You can
always specify questions, yes or no. In your case, set Metadata to Yes. There
is an exception to No, which had to be made due to other issues with the
metadata operations.
