It looks like this is a known issue that has no accepted resolution:

To address some of the comments in the above threads, I am using Nvidia with
the proprietary driver, and the Linux LTS kernel.

Also, I might have found a lead on diagnosing the problem: it seems to happen
more often when a Neovim-Qt window is open at the time the computer goes to
sleep. I'm not totally sure of how strong the correlation is, or if it happens
with other Qt-based applications.
