In the Slideshow UI there is a button that says "Audition an image" - this would bring up a standard file dialog to pick an image file. The image file would be 'modified' in all the same ways that Slideshow is set for and displayed with a small "Yes" or "No" dialog box (or verbiage that would be correct for the function) If the user chooses "Yes" the file is copied to a image source directory. If "No" is selected the next random wallpaper is displayed and operations resume. This would allow one to see if the prospective wallpaper fits well and then choose to copy it into rotation.
