You get a laptop that may get temporarily attached to an external monitor, projector, etc where the external unit is not even always the same. This means that not only you cannot count on a fixed setup. You cannot even count on hard-stop edges because the external screen may either be larger or smaller than the built-in one or may require some scaling factor. Ideally you would like the boundary in between the two screens to be recognized regardless of the specific screen arrangement, so that panel auto-hiding works.
