I would like to see this as well.
There is an alternative pager available that offers this functionality, which
labels each Virtual Desktop using its name rather than its number. For those of
us who name our desktops, this is extremely useful since we don't have to
remember what each number stands for.

Unfortunately this widget seems to no longer be maintained by its author and
there is no Wayland session support; one fork does introduce Wayland support...
sort of.
I believe this actually is the current (as of 5.28) behavior of the default
Pager, so the only thing needed to resolve this regression would be to suppress
the minimap.
