You're reporting this for an ancient version of KMail...
You seem to be using POP3, which by definition deletes the emails from the
server once they were loaded. You should use IMAP instead.
Please reopen this, if you can reproduce it with a current version of KMail.
Also, the "original maintainer" of KMail you found hasn't been active in many
years, you're not going to get any useful info from him.
