To add to the observed behavior:
When progression stops working, there is no next track displayed on the top.
However, with a seemingly random amount of skipping to the next track e.g. by
keyboard shortcut, one can get to another track.
[It feels like there are more tracks in the random pool than are available,
resulting in a large number of non existent tracks being queued.]
