Hi Jaakko,
Items group and items versioning are 2 separated features, currently. As Simon
explain in comment #3, there are other files/ideas in bugzilla to improves and
merge these features.
About the original topic of grouping items automatically, this feature is now
implemented and documented here :

If it miss something, please fill a new wish in bugzilla.
