The applet is very heavily based around NetworkManager. That allows us to have
quite solid integration with all features. Abstraction layers tend to result in
a weaker experience for everyone. NetworkManager is initself an abstraction
layer around other tech (you can use iwd there)
Plasma is designed so that applets are interchangeable; the best bet would be
someone writing a new applet for this case.
What features would you want to see with systemd-networkd - my understanding is
that it was for very static setups ?
