For me this is not an issue anymore. I followed the tutorial on
https://blogs.gnome.org/thaller/2019/03/15/wireguard-in-networkmanager/ and
imported the wg-quick profile into networkmanager. Now it works great. The
magic line was:
sudo nmcli connection import type wireguard file "/etc/wireguard/wg0.conf"
