IMHO this should be the default but MHO isn't particularly important. IEC should be an option (there are times when it's useful, e.g. counting disk "pages"). For that matter, hexidecimal is useful with IEC. However - from a quote on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_prefix): The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), which maintains the International System of Units (SI), expressly prohibits the use of SI prefixes to denote binary multiples, and recommends the use of the IEC prefixes as an alternative since units of information are not included in SI. So using JEDEC would be against their wishes, and they're the authority on these matters.
