As it happens: life got in the way in a major way, but I did create a thread on the Krita Artists forum and the people who did reply seemed to agree with me: https://krita-artists.org/t/layer-colouring-option-behaves-inconsistently-on-group-grouped-layers/46190 (the status says Resolved Later, but I still see the same behaviour in the latest Krita build available to me on Steam, 5.1.1).
