You are right that I have not been able to get an iCal file to work as a new calendar source -- no events show up. However, using the "import calendar" option in the window/hamburger menu works fine, which leads me to believe this is an issue with Akonadi 2. Calendar source names and calendar names are two different things -- on the calendar source creation dialog you are setting the name of the calendar source and not the calendar itself.
