This was supposed to be fixed already; see Bug 455674. And I can't reproduce
the issue anymore myself. When I put the cursor in a place where kickoff will
open, then open it with the Meta key, then search, the item under the cursor
does not immediately become selected.
I'm going to mark this as a duplicate of Bug 455674, and let's continue to
discuss it there. I'm not ready to re-open it yet until we get more reports
because this really really really should be fixed, based on my current
understanding of the code and inability to reproduce it myself anymore
following the fix.
