If you hover your mouse over the symbolic link in Dolphin, what file type does
it say in the status bar?
For me, the link is only identified as a markdown file (and so opened by
KWrite) if the link name ends with ".md"; without that it's identified as a
link to a plain text document which is then opened by whatever app is
associated with plain text documents. Other endings cause the link to open the
app associated with that (e.g. .odt launches libreoffice). This could be the
desired behaviour.
