Cover switch, flip switch and cube effect were the most stable ones in Kwin, the only bug i had with it was that window contents weren't being drawn on every switches when they were minimized . Its code may be huge, but if that were really that hard to maintain (wich was the reason of the removal), then i doubt it would keep that stability if it had to be messed a lot to keep working. I don't know about how it worked in Wayland tho. What is probably true is that they were making it hard to maintain *other features*, not themselves.
