I used to re-map Libinput's virtual buttons using xinput to do the same thing IIRC. FWIW if leaving your thumb on the bottom of your touchpad moves the cursor or starts a two-finger scroll, that's a bug in Libinput and you should report it at https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libinput/libinput/-/issues/.
