I noticed the gradient thumbnail in your toolbar is blank (next to the pattern
thumbnail).
It seems 5.1.0 pre-alpha just doesn't find the gradient you had selected
previously.
Please check if the "Foreground to Transparent" gradient is available in the
popup list, and if so, select it.
I can't reproduce the issue here either, the tool works as expected for me.
And yes, analyzing a batch of screen recordings is quite time consuming...and
still doesn't answer the crucial questions.
