After deleting the files in .config/session and logging out you should see entries in the journal (journalctl -b) where ksmserver fails to delete the files in .config/session because they don't exist any more. For your own edification you might try some controlled tests with a small number of virtual desktops and 1 application in a desktop other than 1.
