Happened to me as well.
Dovecot says the following:

auth: plain(?,1.2.3.4,<xxx>): Username character disallowed by

```
Note the username. I've replaced it with XXXXXXXXX because dovecot log shows my
password there instead of username. I think KMail sends it this way
(erroneously).
Restarting KMail helps, yes.
