You're absolutely correct: I need to add the clip to the timeline first.  Sorry
for wasting your time; I really should have read the handbook first.

Nevertheless, I think that an error message would be useful in this case:
Kdenlive could tell the user that "there are no clips on the timeline to
render" (or something like that).  Shall I create a feature request for this?
