Commenting to confirm that I also experience this issue.
When I encounter this issue, if I wait long enough (about 10 minutes), my
desktop will usually start responding again. I assume this has to due with the
length of time I leave my computer idle, as the few times I've been forced to
restart it were when it was idle for the entire night, rather than being idle
for less than an hour.
Basically, the less time my computer spends idling with a locked screen, the
faster (and more likely) it will stop being frozen after I log back in.
