For what it's worth, I get:

    $ kmimetypefinder5 sample1.nef 
    image/x-nikon-nef

    $ xdg-mime query filetype sample1.nef
    image/x-nikon-nef

But:

    $ file sample1.nef
    sample1.nef: TIFF image data, little-endian, direntries=27, height=320,
bps=338, compression=none, Photometric

This is with:

    Arch Linux (from pkgbuild 20210815)

    Plasma: 5.22.5
    Frameworks: 5.85.0
    Qt: 5.15.2

and

    $ pacman -Q shared-mime-info
    shared-mime-info 2.0+57+gc1d1c70-1
