Many thanks for your response and the following is all the information I
can give you:-

System: Ubuntu 16.04 Kdenlive version 16.07.70

Original video created using a Sony DCR-SR77E Camcorder
Duration 12M 21S Container MPEG-2 System Stream Size: 531.7Mb
Video - 720x576 MPEG-2 25fps Bitrate: 11085
Audio - DVD AC-3 (ATSC A/52) Surround 5.1 48000Hz Bitrate: 448kbps

Using Kdenlive > Project > Add Clip > edit clip > Render

Generic File Properties:-
Generic MPEG-2 took 3M 20S to render > Properties
TABS = Basic, Permissions, Open With, Audio (THIS IS THE PROBLEM)
Type: MPEG video > Size: 31.5Mb
Viewed in Totem Movie Player > Sound OK but no video (NOT SUPRISING)

Lossless File Properties:-
Lossless MPEG-2 took 1M 34s to render Size: 1.1Gb > Properties
TABS = Basic, Permissions, Open With, Audio/Video
Type MPEG video > Size: 1.1Gb
Audio/Video Tab > Duration 10m 48s > Container: MPEG-1 System Stream
Video - 720x576 MPEG-2 25fps Bitrate: 12613 kbps
Audio - DVD AC-3 (ATSC A/52) Stereo 48000Hz Bitrate: 512kbps
Viewed in Totem - It starts but then 'An error occurred - The stream is in
the wrong format'

Playing edited video clips using 'Windows Media Player'
Generic file played just sound which is not suprising.
Lossless file played OK.

Not sure if any of this helps.

Regards
John Fletcher
