Reopened as after the upgrade to plasma 5.22.4 the KDE settings cannot find the
touchpad again.
As before I ran sudo depmod -a
then rebooted. KDE settings now find the touchpad and the touchpad is now
working as before.
So it appears that a KDE upgrade may break the operation of the touchpad which
can then be fixed (until the next upgrade?) by running sudo depmod -a and
rebooting.
