- right click Dock -> Add dock/panel -> Empty panel
- move your empty panel to left or right edge whatever you prefer
- set the visibility mode for your empty panel to: "On Demand Sidebar"
- from the sidebar button applet just choose the edge that your sidebar is
present or choose "All Edges"
