I would like to second this, but I wonder if there could be some edge cases
where this can't work.

Most videos won't have a square format, but there will still be some video that
are encoded in a landscape mode while displaying portrait content (and reverse
?).
Maybe that's not an issue as it is rare and that would already be an
improvement ?
