I also made a post (https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/f2p9zt/plasmashell_keeps_crashing_after_updating_to_518/) on Reddit for help which contains some additional info. After some time I decided to delete the old plasma config (i.e. themes, icons, and all config I could found) and then restarting the system resolved this issue. After that, I removed the backports ppa and never tried this again. I think, If I do this again, the same issue could occur.
