While the outside is still treated as transparency, there is a new mode in
Color Smudge engine that provides a second workaround.
1) Lock alpha on the layer you're on, OR
2) Color Smudge editor -> Smudge Length -> Smear Alpha (uncheck to get rid of
this behaviour)
Does it fix your issue?
Note that in case of Smear Alpha off, the Eraser Mode doesn't work,
unfortunately.
