I agree it is completely ambiguous and even inconsistent. When "Load last used
session" is set, kate always starts with a new, anonymous session (dropping the
state of the previous).

However, it is only true until you explicitly start or open a session. From
then on, kate will always open that session. 

Even if launched w/o --start. Or if you do a 'kate --startanon', quit that and
then just 'kate', it will return to the session from before the anon.

It seems you are stuck to that session. Even if you start a new session (kate
menu -> session -> new session), quit kate and 'kate', it returns to the
session from before the new session.

This is tested with kate on master.
