Since a couple of days, I have the same issue using akonadi version 5.15.1
(20.08.1).
For me it doesn't matter if the mail is deeper in the mail chain or not.
I suspect it started when I tried to move a mail to a new folder when it was
still being processed by the mail filters. Mail filtering is very slow for some
reason, even on outgoing mail. The mail I sent was delivered to the Sent Mail
folder. I moved it to a different folder and immediately got an error message.
At that point I saw that the mail filters were still running.
Since then I get the message every single time I send a mail. The mail will end
up being sent, it gets placed in the Sent Mail folder, filtering will happen
and at the end the error message pops up, while the mail will be left in an
'unread' state. Normally Sent mails will end up in a 'read' state, so I suspect
it's that state change that is failing.
Please let me know if I can help debugging the issue further
