I too have given up any hope to be able to use the once worlds best Desktop again, as I would have liked. Try it with Manjaro Xfce, this is light Distrubution, or to continue with the Goodies from *buntu, install Xubuntu. You can also install Xfce over your 14.04, I think. however, I did not dare to try it on my working program.
