It does indeed solve the issue and even pictures taken with my Canon PowerShot A620 do show as proper thumbnails. Is anybody familiar with the internals of KDE/Kubuntu, though, and knows if Gwenview 20.12.0 will ever by made available for Kubuntu 20.04 LTS?
