Can not reproduce:
spectacle -b
ps -ef | grep spec

--exclude-dir=.bzr --exclude-dir=CVS --exclude-dir=.git --exclude-dir=.hg
--exclude-dir=.svn --exclude-dir=.idea --exclude-dir=.tox spec
it does save a screenshot in my default folder and a notification shows up.
When that notification disappears, spectacle closes.
What settings do you have set in spectacle?
