            Bug ID: 364830
Summary: git master - Improvements to the Library widget
           Product: kdenlive
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Mint (Ubuntu based)
                OS: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: User Interface
          Assignee: j...@kdenlive.org
          Reporter: jesse.dub...@gmail.com

Just tried the library widget for the first time, and I have to say it was
pretty confusing at first. I wanted to make a few suggestions to simplify it:

(1) Change the icon for the "add clip to Project" button and context menu. I
interpreted the PLUS sign to first mean create a new library item or add a clip
to the library. Looking through the breeze icons, I'd recommend the
"dialog-ok-apply" icon, or "document-import" icon.

(2) Replace the term "Clips" or "Items" in the entire widget to "Edits". I feel
edits are a much more appropriate title. Users won't initially recognize the
".mlt" extension as a clip, and I think it's too confusing with all of the
items in the Project Bin also being called "clips". I realize the .mlt file is
being imported and becomes a clip, but I think until it becomes a clip it would
be a good idea to differentiate it from the project bin items.

(3) Change "Add clip to Project" tooltip to "Add edit to Project Bin", or "Add
clip to Project Bin" if you're staying with the clip tag. I thought the .mlt
file was going to be imported right into the timeline, and I ended up reporting
a bug because I thought it wasn't working. Users need to know it's going into
the Project Bin.

(4) I would definitely change the "add selection to library" tooltip and icon.
It doesn't let the user know the selection is supposed to be from the timeline,
and it doesn't exactly convey how those selected clips are going to look in the
library.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: 1) Have the button (probably with the Plus icon) say
"Create new Library edit" (I know, it may be a little lengthy), and then if
there are no clips selected, have the status bar show an error saying "You must
select one or more clips in the timeline to create a new library edit). Or 2)
Chang icon button (to Plus symbol is the best option I can think of) with the
tooltip "Add selected clips in timeline to new edit".

(5) This would be a cool feature, have an option in the context menu titled
"Open edit in new window" with an icon like story-editor, document-edit-sign or
edit-find. It would open up the edit (.mlt file) in a new Kdenlive window and
allow the user to edit that particular project. Once they save and close, it
could automatically update in Kdenlive, or there could be a button called
"Reload edit" and it would update the library somehow.

Anyway, those are a few workflow suggestions to make the library less ambiguous
and more user friendly. :)

Reproducible: Always
