Also, the 'not visible' has never happened to me throughout the years of suffering. Icons were ALWAYS visible here, though coherently re-placed on the screen whenever a REDUCTION of resolution was encountered. INCREASING the screen resolution would result in the icons re-appearing in their respective most recent positions on said screen of lower resolution, ie the upper left corner. (Though slightly OT here, to all: It seems we have no file recording a specific file for desktop layout? I am asking because a few days ago my kubuntu 20.04 Desktop - for yet unknown reason - had disappeared at normal logout-login; reverting with a basic screen with three icons in the upper left corner, and the standard login background image with the split diagonale.
