It did not. The error message led me to a set of posts that suggested the problem could be out-of-date firmware of the optical drive. The Samsung drive is circa 2009 but I could not find a support page for it so I'm struck with the firmware I have. I decided to buy a new drive (ASUS). Now I can successfully burn both the new TDK disks and the old Verbatim ones.
