In Kate5, we have a new tabbar showing the documents. It is only single-line,
but since this the default tabbar is a standard behavior, this will probably
stay this way.
If you have many documents open, please use the document sidebar and the quick
open feature (ctrl+alt+o). Will close this as wont-fix, since it is unlikely
this will be implemented.
