Thanks for the detailed information. I guess we'll have to wait for 15.10 then.
The issue with KDE crashing during startup at certain display configurations
was solved for me by deleting the screen configurations in
~/.local/share/kscreen. Since then there are also no crashes when I disconnect
the external screen.
