Is your previously selected color scheme applied, or are you getting the default scheme? I've had problems with one machine recently (fortunately, one one which I don't really "need" to run a desktop GUI) where it fails to start the KDE session correctly and all sorts of stuff goes wrong, including the wrong color scheme applied and inability to change it.
