I had encountered the same issue on my Gentoo machine just recently and I think
I've figured out what is going on. When I checked my tags using Kid3 I
realized that all of my albums that were not showing artwork had the cover art
tagged as "Picture" (with 'other' on the dropdown). After editing the tags on
all the affected albums to "Picture: Cover (front)", refreshing my collection,
and restarting Elisa everything works as expected and all my album art shows
up!
So Elisa seems to look for album art specifically tagged as "Picture: Cover
(front)" and ignores everything else.
